Southwest Airlines recently surprised passengers on Flight #1989 from Nashville to Miami with a live concert by GRAMMY-winning songwriter Liz Rose, who was en route to see her co-written songs with Taylor Swift performed in Miami. This special Southwest flight, held on October 17, marked the airline’s 100th Live at 35® in-air concert, an initiative launched in 2011 that brings live music performances to passengers cruising at 35,000 feet.
“It was the perfect way to celebrate 100 in-flight performances and our Live at 35 program, with a plane full of music fans singing along to songs Liz helped create,” said Sarah Falvey, Southwest’s VP of Communications and Brand Reputation. “As part of our recent expansion to support major events, we loved surprising Flight #1989 with this amazing songwriter who played a part in making the night unforgettable.”
Liz Rose shared her enthusiasm, saying, “As a songwriter, connecting with people through music and lyrics means everything to me, and singing on Flight #1989 at 35,000 feet on the way to Miami was an amazing experience. Southwest’s Live at 35 program brings musicians to new heights, surprising passengers in the best way.”
Passengers joined in, singing along and making heart signs as Rose performed “All Too Well” and “You Belong with Me.” Afterward, they received commemorative concert cards and custom friendship bracelets from Southwest, featuring phrases like “Flight 1989” and “Spread LUV.” Southwest’s Live at 35 program has welcomed performers of all backgrounds, including artists from the airline’s On The Rise program, which helps support creatives as they advance in their careers.
For this special performance, Rose was joined by songwriter Phil Barton on guitar. The event was a collaboration with Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Cafe, a partner of Southwest since 2015, known for supporting emerging talent like Liz Rose as they launch their music careers.
